Staunton is proud to recognize Tim Smiddy, a lifelong public servant, educator, and community leader whose impact spans generations. Throughout his many years in Staunton, Tim has dedicated himself to serving others - through teaching, mentoring, volunteering, and honoring our nation's veterans. His influence has reached hundreds of students and families, leaving a lasting imprint on the character of our community.

A longtime elementary and middle school teacher, Tim founded the acclaimed Patriot Club, a program that teaches students about American history, citizenship, and veteran appreciation. Under his leadership, the Patriot Club earned both state and national recognition, including honors from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His dedication earned him the VFW National Teacher of the Year, the VFW District 12 Teacher of the Year, and recognition from the Illinois Principals Association.

In recent years, Tim pioneered another groundbreaking effort: the creation of the Staunton High School Honor Guard - the first school-based honor guard in Illinois. This group has quickly become a respected presence at football games, parades, and community events, proudly representing veterans and instilling discipline, respect, and patriotism in its members. Tim devotes countless hours to coaching, mentoring, and guiding these students, often while quietly supporting them in their daily lives.

Tim's service extends far beyond the classroom. As a former Staunton police officer, he protected the community for many years with integrity and courage. As a volunteer, he continues to support civic events, help local organizations, and enrich the lives of families throughout Staunton. Known for his humility, kindness, and generosity, Tim is the type of person who never seeks recognition - yet is always the first to lend a hand.

Through education, service, and unwavering dedication, Tim Smiddy has shaped the hearts and minds of countless young people and strengthened the community he loves. His leadership, patriotism, and compassion make him an outstanding role model and a truly deserving candidate for Citizen of the Year!
